Rotational shifts tend to have weird hours. There are various studies that have examined the relationship between health and working at different hours. According to a recent study, the researchers found that people who work in rotational shifts, especially the male gender, have higher risks of type 2 diabetes.
According to Dr. Alan Manevitz, who is a clinical psychiatrist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, “Physicians have long known that working shifts disrupts many key body chemicals, creating a ripple effect that can lead to ailments such as gastrointestinal disorders, cardiovascular disease and even cancer. Now type 2 diabetes can be added to this considerable list.”
In the recently conducted study, China’s Huazhong University of Science and Technology’s researchers have reviewed data on 226,652 individuals from 12 studies. Information, related to work schedules of the participants, their exercise level, family history of diabetes and body mass index, was possessed by the team members for research work.
It was found that people who worked in rotational shifts had nine percent higher risks of having type 2 diabetes. When only the male gender was observed from the group of participants, it was found that the men had 35 percent increased risk. For all those who continuously rotated their shift timings from day to night, the risk increased by around 42 percent.
According to BBC news, the researchers noted, “The result suggests that male shift workers should pay more attention to the prevention of diabetes. Given the increasing prevalence of shift work worldwide and the heavy economic burden of diabetes, the results of our study provide practical and valuable clues for the prevention of diabetes.”
The researchers also stated that the shift work leads to obesity as well, which is also related to the risk of type 2 diabetes.

Unfortunately, with job scarcity in today’s economic climate, people have to accept work when they can find it. Many more folks are working odd hours to make ends meet and this is not only having an impact on family life but on the general health of today’s employees. This makes it even more critical that we pay closer attention to the foods we eat and the physical activity we undertake each day as well as getting proper rest.
